About 900 Austrian police officers raided homes mosques and prayer rooms in Vienna, Graz and Linz, following two years of investigations into the suspected recruiters for the Islamic State in Austria.

APA reported, about 900 police officers took part in raids in Vienna, Graz and Linz, searching mosques and prayer rooms, as well as private homes. The Friday raids followed two years of investigations into the suspects who were said to be attempting to persuade young Austrians to act as mercenaries in Syria and raising funds for the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner said that the police operation was one of the “biggest bets in the history of the Austrian state security”. According to Austrian Interior Ministry, some 150 Austrians left the country to fight alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria. Some of them were stopped while attempting to depart.

The Islamic State is a Sunni jihadist group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, it launched an offensive in Iraq, seizing large areas in both countries and announcing the establishment of an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control.

Numerous young people from the European Union, the United States and Canada are believed to have joined the jihadist group.
British officials say at least 500 UK citizens have left for Iraq and Syria in recent months and German authorities estimate 550 German nationals have joined the IS militants.

Did the European and American youths go to join a “jihadist” group? I doubt that. However, in lands of “plenty of unemployment,” I do believe that they would go and join a mercenary operation for the prospects of a future with personal wealth. It isn’t idealism or religious fervor, it is the simple fact that living in the basement of “mom and dad’s” home with no future and no hope of a future, playing war games and RPG shooter games, when offered opportunities to make $500 or more a day shooting people in a distant land that they don’t know or want to know, it sounds like a way to get out from under a meaningless life at home. Sure, it changes them and they are aware of it, but they think they can rise above who they become at the end of their tour. It is doubtful if many will ever return to their homelands because they will forever never fit in, so they will go somewhere to start a new life, trying to outgrow what they became in order to get there. IS is nothing but a mercenary operation intending to destroy anything of value while serving the “masters” that created it.
