King Abdullah II: Terrorists and Criminals Targeting Syria and Iraq

At the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) which held at the UN Headquarters in New York, King Abdullah II, King of Jordan, stressed that the world’s challenges had grown significantly since the last general debate. The security of every nation would be shaped by the fate of his country’s region, the Middle East. The global community must act together to tackle the issues facing that part of the world and provide opportunities for dialogue and reconciliation.

The security of every nation will be shaped by the fate of the Middle East. Together, we can and must undertake urgent humanitarian and security measures create durable solutions for today’s crises and provide new opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation, prosperity and peace.”

He added: “The terrorists and criminals targeting Syria, Iraq, and other countries today are extreme reflections of a global threat. Our international community needs a collective strategy to contain and defeat these groups. My country is at the forefront of this effort. We are leading a number of initiatives to counter extremism. As representative of the Asia-Pacific bloc on the UN Security Council, we look for a strong outcome of the Council’s Summit on Threats to International Peace and Security caused by Terrorist Acts, chaired by President Obama.”

He also emphasized the importance of respect among different religions, reiterating that the teachings of Islam prohibited violence against Christians and other religious groups. Jordan was at the forefront of interfaith dialogue and had spearheaded a number of such initiatives. Because of the abhorrent crimes against religious groups recently seen in Syria and Iraq, Jordan would propose a draft resolution that would make such acts a crime against humanity.

He said: “The teachings of true Islam are clear: sectarian conflict and strife are utterly condemned. Islam prohibits violence against Christians and other communities that make up each country. Let me say once again: Arab Christians are an integral part of my region’s past, present, and future.”

King Abdullah II calls on Muslim and other leaders to work together against falsehoods and divisive actions. Jordan is honoured to have spearheaded global inter-faith and intra-religious initiatives. Building on this, Jordan will introduce a draft resolution covering the general proposition that a new international offence, falling under the crimes of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, be considered, on the basis of the aberrant new crimes against religious communities seen recently in Syria and Iraq.

Shifting to the topic of Palestinian rights and statehood, King Abdullah II said that the future of the region could not be addressed without addressing that pivotal issue. He expressed concern at the “dangerous halt in the progress towards peace”, and called for a mobilization in international efforts to rebuild Gaza and marshal a united, global response to achieve “once-and-for-all a lasting settlement”. That, he asserted, would create the foundation necessary to re-launch final status negotiations on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative. He underscored that the path to a comprehensive peace settlement must involve a two-State solution as that would offer security and normal relations for Israel with its neighbours as well as a viable, sovereign State for the Palestinians along the 1967 lines.
