Israel barred Today UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Pierre Kraehenbuehl and the UN’s Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs in the occupied Palestinian Territories James Rowley from entering the Gaza Strip. The director of UNRWA operations in Gaza Robert Turner said in a press conference held at one of the refugee schools that they have opened to accommodate the thousands of displaced people from the north of Gaza: “The occupation authorities prevented today UNRWA Commissioner Pierre Kraehenbuehl and Humanitarian Coordinator James Rowley from entering Gaza for “security” reasons.
Turner said: “Today we open 8 schools to accommodate the thousands of displaced people from the northern of Gaza Strip. He added that the number of those who are in school now is 4000, but the number is increasing every moment.
Turner said that he talked with an old man in the school and he told him that he had migrated from the area where he lives in Atatra, the district of Beit Lahiya in Gaza Strip for the third time during the three israeli wars of 2008, 2012 and 2014 and that he lived together with his family in the same school at the same classroom during his staying.”
Mr. Turner said that the Palestinian civilians are paying a heavy price for Israel’s ongoing military attacks on the Gaza Strip. He called for an immediate end to the five-day assault.
Mr. Turner visited Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza where the Palestinians wounded by Israeli bombardment of the coastal enclave are receiving medical treatment. He during a press conference held at the Hospital, that he had learned about the needs of the Gaza health sector, which had already been struggling even before the start of the Israeli offensive.
He added: “This war should stop immediately due to the dangerous and unacceptable damage it is causing adding that the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, had declared a state of emergency since Tuesday as its clinics had been working continuously and distributing food to Gazans.
He said the relief agency was ready to accommodate 35,000 people in its schools if Israel launched a land operation against Gaza.
