Amman_edited-1The European Union has hosted a symposium on “Creative Cities” in the Jordanian capital Amman, under the patronage of the Mayor of Amman Akel Biltaji. The purpose of the symposium was to explore the benefits and opportunities of creative city programmes and to examine the impact that a creative agenda has on shaping the image of a city and on its social and economic development.

The symposium brought together mayors of several Jordanian cities including the Mayor of Tafileh, which is this year’s Jordanian city of culture, and Ajloun, which was the city of culture for 2013. Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and European experts in the development of cultural and creative city programmes were also present.

Practical examples of best practice from the European Union were presented, including case studies from Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, which demonstrated how establishing an environment for creativity to flourish can increase a city’s profile for tourism, investment, and the city residents.

“The leaders in municipalities have an important role to play in creating unique cultural identities of their towns and in developing the towns as cultural and touristic products,” stated Joanna Wronecka, the European Union Ambassador in her opening speech. “Across Europe, many regions and cities are considering culture and the cultural and creative sectors as essential assets to boost their economic competitiveness and attractiveness. As an example, recent European Capitals of Culture have successfully created jobs, healed their social fabric, and transformed their image”. (EU Neighbourhood Info).
