Israel Targets Arab States, Syria and Iran at IAEA

DSC_6120a copyDr. Shaul Chorev, head of the Israeli commission to the IAEA in Vienna claimed while delivering a speech during today’s afternoon session of the 57 General Conference, that the Arab States had rejected all Israeli efforts of peace at the IAEA and other international organizations in the field atomic energy, accusing them of using the IAEA General Conferences to “launch a campaign against Israel”.

He said that israel was committed to the IAEA principles regarding atomic energy and that israel “will establish an information centre in Beir Shaba (Ber Al-Sabaa) in coordination with IAEA TC to educate the public about atomic energy”.

Dr. Chorev used the occasion to criticize the Syrian atomic programme and to accuse the Syrian regime of “perpetrating crimes against humanity”.

DSC_6087a copyHe proceeded to accuse Iran of “repeating the same reports before the IAEA General Conferences and creating false information” about their atomic energy program, “using deception and concealment to buy time for developing its nuclear program”.

He said “the picture that the Iranian representatives are portraying regarding openness and transparency of their nuclear program … stands in sharp contradiction with Iran’s actual actions and the facts on the ground.”

He criticized the moderate speech delivered by the head of the Iranian delegation to the IAEA during the opening session of 57th General Conference of the IAEA, without mentioning the name of Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Akbar Salehi, saying that the issue is not whether Iran “has nominated new envoys, modified its diplomatic vocabulary …, but whether Iran is addressing seriously and in a timely manner outstanding issues that have remained unresolved for too long” and claiming that the IAEA and the international community “are grossly abused by Iran”.

Dr. Chorev praised the coordination and co-operative relation between his government and the Palestinian Authority in issues regarding security and atomic energy, claiming that the dialogue started between Israel and the PA is supposed to “make reconciliation”.

He said: “the political dialogue between Israel and the Palestinian Authority has been resumed and we hope that it might open new options towards dialogue and reconciliation. He stated that the IAEC is engaged with Palestinians Authority through the IAEA Technical cooperation program.”  it should be noted that in the past years, the Arab states sponsored resolution on Israeli Nuclear Capabilities (INC), calling on Israel to join the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and place all its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.

Israel has nuclear weapons which are considered a grave threat by the Arab States, not only to the Middle East but also the rest of the world. Israel has developed nuclear capabilities but does not publicly acknowledge it as a matter of policy. The IAEA applies safeguards in Israel pursuant to an INFCIRC/66 – type safeguards agreement which is implemented at the Soreq Nuclear Research Centre. In the Al-Nakab desert is the “Negev” Nuclear Research Center also known as “Dimona Reactor”, which is not under IAEA safeguards and is widely thought to be the main site of development of nuclear weapons in Israel.
