“An overwhelming international consensus exists on the need to end the occupation that began in 1967, address the fundamental security concerns of both parties, find a solution to the refugee issue and see Jerusalem emerge from negotiation as the capital of two States”.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Message on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 29 November 2010
In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II))
In resolution 60/37 of 1 December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights, as part of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 29 November, to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN.
The observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People also encouraged Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity. (Source: UN)
When the United Nations, in 1977, proclaimed 29 November of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, it was a clear admission of guilt towards this people. It was recognition that the Palestinian people deserve international solidarity and support, in the name of justice and rights. This was merely one small event in a long story.
The story of Palestine and its people is one that will go down in history. In fact it has already started to do just that. One might say that the victor is the one that writes history. The victor in this case will inevitably be justice, and justice is at the core of the Palestinian struggle against apartheid, colonialism and oppression. And as in every episode in history, everyone will be mentioned according to their positions, and more importantly their deeds with respect to each story.
In the day of solidarity, let us remember that.
The only justice for Palestine will be full return of all Palestinians and one Palestinian state (Israelis not guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity allowed to remain in peace) and full reparations by all who afflicted the Palestinian people.
However, I think there needs to be a real house cleaning in Fatah and Hamas for them to be effective in providing leadership.
Best always.
Steve
I very much like this perspective.
Palestine use to have a middle and wealthy class.
And then you look at it today, it’s bunch of angry poor
kids throwing rocks.
I am with you, Kawther, as ever. I will fly the Pal flag tomorrow, on the 29th.
Joe
